Grinding for Maximum Flavor
Each coffeemaker is designed to brew using a
specific grind.
In general, the faster the brew cycle, the finer the
grind (e.g., very fine for espresso) and the slower
the brew cycle, the coarser the grind (e.g., the
coffee press, where grounds steep for approximately
four minutes).
Approximate times for blade grinders
Using the right grind for a given coffeemaker is an essential
element in achieving optimum coffee flavor. The
following grinds work best in the coffeemakers
listed below:
Coarse
6 seconds
Coffee press
Medium
8–10 seconds
Most flat-bottom
Drip coffeemakers
Extra-Fine

Helpful Hints:
When using a blade grinder, shake it gently during grinding
to achieve a more uniform grind.
A coffee cup is 180 mL of water poured through 10 g of coffee,
ground correctly for your brewing method. Cup
markings on home brewers vary widely, but few are
180 mL.
